Mary Sparrow - Principal, City Academy Norwich

Mary Sparrow

Mary Sparrow has been principal of City Academy Norwich since January 2015.  Mrs Sparrow joined the Academy following more than four years as headteacher of Wexham School in Slough, during which time she oversaw the school’s improvement from a long-standing Oftsed rating of ‘Satisfactory’ to one of ‘Good’ in September 2013.

Under Mrs Sparrow’s leadership, Wexham School was also transformed from being in the bottom 3 per cent in the country for progress made by disadvantaged students, to being in the top 108 schools for Pupil Premium progress – an achievement which earned the school a commendation from Minister of State for Schools, David Laws MP.

Previously Mrs Sparrow was deputy headteacher at South Camden Community School in London.  She had earlier established her teaching career as an Advanced Skills Teacher in drama and has also worked as a local authority education advisor.

A former graduate in drama and computing, Mrs Sparrow likes to harness the power of creativity and digital technology in making teaching and learning relevant, engaging and effective for students.  At Wexham School one of the innovations introduced by Mrs Sparrow, to make the most of opportunities for mobile learning, saw every student provided with an iPad mini.

On her appointment as City Academy Norwich’s new principal, Mrs Sparrow said: “I have been impressed by the commitment of the teaching staff and students, as well as by the quality of the teaching, and by the fact that the students I have met are full of aspirations for what they want to achieve…. I am really excited by what our students, supported by the staff, parents, governors, sponsors, our TEN Group partners and the local community, can achieve together.”
